This Juzek upright bass bears its original, hand-signed label. Juzek labels were imprinted with the location of the Juzek shop, this one is stamped “Made in Czechoslovakia.” Jan Juzek was a violin maker in Prague who bought instruments from various craftsmen in the Bohemia region under his own name for import into the United States.
quite possibly were made by the E H Roth firm in Markneukirchen Germany, and varnished in Czechlovakia
There were several luthier shops in Markneukirchen that made basses ordered by Juzek and others.
From what I've learned, Juzek labeled basses were imported by Juzek's NYC company, Metropolitan Music, and sold to the NYC school system and probably others. The business started in the mid 1920's. They were made in large part by Wilfer, in Czech before the war, and Germany after. The Juzek name is a trade name. John Juzek never handmade a bass.
